美国梦与移民改革
The First Immigrants in American History
美国历史上的第一批移民
The two buzz words in the air these days are "immigration reform." To say America is a nation of immigrants is a cliché —but it is.I think most of our readers have heard the story,at least the first part,of the 102 pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower from England to America, landed at Cape Cod1,and established the Plymouth Colony(普利茅斯殖民地)in 1620.The Mayflower pilgrims were by no means the first immigrants to America.Even before them, waves of European immigrants settled down in areas now known as Virginia and New York City. But,the Plymouth settlement was by far the most successful:An estimate in 2002 showed that there were about 35 million descendants of the Mayflower passengers in the US,representing 10 percent of the country's population.
